The Portugal Golden Residence Permit Program, or Portugal golden visa, is a five-year residency by investment scheme for non-EU nationals. As a full EU member, Portugal offers this permit, which provides visa-free access to the Schengen Area in Europe. The program requires an average of only seven days of stay per year in Portugal over the five-year period.

The Portugal Golden Residence Permit Program
The Portugal Golden Residence Permit Program, often referred to as the Portugal Golden Visa Program, is a five-year residency-by-investment scheme for non-EU nationals. This permit grants the holder the ability to live, work, and study in Portugal and provides visa-free travel within Europe's Schengen Area. Additionally, the program requires only an average of seven days per year spent in Portugal over the five years, which can contribute to eligibility for citizenship after this period.

Portugal golden visa requirements
Applicants can choose any one option in any one of the following categories:
Capital transfer
One of the following options:
EUR 500,000 for investing in fund or venture capital fund units dedicated to the capitalization of companies based in Portugal, with a minimum maturity of five years and at least 60% of the portfolio in companies with a registered office in Portugal (real estate investments are excluded).
EUR 500,000 for supporting research activities conducted by public or private entities within the national scientific and technological system.
EUR 400,000 if the research is in a low population density area*
Business
One of the following options:
Creation of at least ten new jobs.
Eight new jobs if located in a low population density area*
EUR 500,000 for establishing a commercial company based and registered in Portugal, which must create a minimum of five permanent jobs for three years. Alternatively, this amount can be used to increase the share capital of an existing company in Portugal, provided it either creates at least five new permanent jobs or maintains at least ten existing jobs for three years.
*Low population density areas are defined as regions with fewer than 100 inhabitants per square kilometer or with a GDP per capita below 75% of the national average.
Procedures and time frame of the Portugal Golden Visa
Once the residence permit is granted, the client must submit biometric data and updated original documents at each renewal. Initially, the permit is typically valid for one year, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is currently issued for two years. After this, the permit can be renewed for two additional periods of two years each.
The Portugal Golden Residence Permit Program requires the main applicant to visit Portugal twice during the application process:
To select the qualifying investment, initiate the legal procedures, and open a bank account.
To provide biometric data and original documents.
Following the issuance of the residence permit, the client must continue to provide biometric data and updated documents at each renewal.
The entire process to obtain a Portuguese residence permit through investment generally takes over 18 months.
