Living in Jersey

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, situated in the English Channel, just 22 kilometers off the coast of France. Although a British Crown Dependency, it is not part of the United Kingdom or the European Union. Jersey has its own government, known as the States Assembly, and its legal and financial systems. The island has a rich history, with influences from both British and French cultures. Jersey enjoys a mild climate, making it a popular tourist destination, and is known for its scenic landscapes, beaches, and historical sites such as Mont Orgueil Castle.

The economy of Jersey is driven by financial services, tourism, and agriculture, particularly dairy farming, famous for its Jersey cows. The island also benefits from low taxes, which attract businesses and wealthy individuals.

Living in Jersey offers a high quality of life, thanks to its beautiful scenery, safe environment, and strong economy. The island provides modern amenities, excellent healthcare, and a good education system. Jersey is also well-connected to the UK and mainland Europe, making travel easy.

Jersey’s residents enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, with plenty of outdoor activities like walking, cycling, and water sports. The island has a strong sense of community, and events and festivals are common. Although the island is small, it offers a cosmopolitan feel due to the mix of nationalities and cultures living there.

Economy

Jersey's economy has evolved from a community traditionally reliant on agriculture, boat building, fishing, and knitwear to tourism and finance. The British pound and Jersey pound (valued 1:1) form the retail currency, with all major currencies accepted for financial transactions.

Tourism

Tourism contributes about 25% of the island's GDP. The largest groups of visitors come from the UK, and the island is also a popular destination for those from Germany, France, and the other Channel Islands. Jersey offers an array of world-class hotels with excellent facilities, a variety of restaurants and bars, and a lively nightlife.

Education

Education holds great significance for both the government and the people of Jersey. The island’s education system is highly regarded and follows the UK's national curriculum. Approximately 10,500 students are enrolled in Jersey's schools, which include 23 primary schools (10 of which have nursery units) and five secondary schools, along with several private school options. While Jersey does not have its own universities, students typically pursue higher education in the UK or abroad. However, University College Jersey, part of Highlands College, provides further education on the island, offering a broad range of academic, vocational, and adult education courses.
