Citizenship can be acquired after five years of legal residence in Latvia, provided the individual has been a permanent resident during the five-year period before applying. To qualify, the applicant needs to have resided in Latvia for a minimum of four out of the last five years.
Latvia does not permit dual citizenship, meaning applicants must renounce their previous nationality to obtain Latvian citizenship. This policy reflects Latvia's commitment to maintaining a unified national identity.
