Living in North Macedonia

The Republic of North Macedonia is strategically situated at a key crossroads of transportation routes, notably the north–south corridor from the Danube River to the Aegean Sea, and the east–west trade routes linking the Black Sea and Istanbul with the Adriatic Sea. The pro-Western government supports a civil law system, benefiting both native and investor citizens.

The country is predominantly mountainous, with Mount Korab (2,752 meters) on the Albanian border being the highest point. The northwest, near the Šar Mountains, is covered in lush forests, while fertile valleys offer significant agricultural investment opportunities.

North Macedonia experiences a moderate continental climate, with the eastern region having milder winters and hotter, drier summers compared to the west. The nation values its Macedonian language and culture, investing in education and the arts, including theater, film, and literature. Its cuisine reflects a blend of Mediterranean, Balkan, and Turkish influences.

A Growing Economy and Noteworthy Business Competitiveness

In the mid-1990s, North Macedonia began attracting new trading partners, leading to economic growth. Despite a brief decline in GDP at the turn of the 21st century, the country rebounded swiftly and navigated the global economic downturn of 2008 more effectively than many others.

Today, North Macedonia's economy is centered on agriculture and trade, with key trading partners including Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Italy, Romania, Serbia, and the United Kingdom. Major exports are iron and steel, clothing and accessories, and food products. The country is self-sufficient in basic food, coal, and hydroelectric power.

The government’s free economic zone (FEZ) policy, which includes a 10-year tax holiday, has spurred the creation of numerous FEZs across the country. These low tax rates and the FEZ policy have made North Macedonia an attractive destination for foreign investment, contributing to its ranking among the top 20 countries globally for ease of doing business.

A strong Agricultural, Manufacturing, and Mining industry

Agriculture accounts for approximately 10% of North Macedonia’s GDP, with key crops including tobacco, fruits, vegetables, wheat, rice, and corn. Viticulture and dairy farming also play significant roles in the economy.

The country is rich in mineral resources, featuring deposits of antimony, copper, chromium, gold, iron, lead, manganese, nickel, silver, and zinc. These minerals support the manufacturing sector, which contributes about 15% to the nation’s GDP.

Other key industries include:

Machine and automotive components

Information and communication technology

Textile and clothing

Energy

Pharmaceuticals and medical devices

Wine production
