New Zealand Active Investor Plus Visa Program

In September 2022, New Zealand introduced the Active Investor Plus Visa, replacing its former investor visa programs. This visa is specifically designed to attract high-value investors and promote investments that benefit the local economy. The Active Investor Plus Visa grants applicants the ability to live, work, and study in New Zealand indefinitely, provided they fulfill all investment and residency requirements.

Benefits of New Zealand residence by investment

  • High quality of life, diverse multicultural population, and low population density.

  • Residency extends to spouses and dependent children up to 24 years old.

  • Political, social, and economic stability.

  • A strong legal system rooted in English law.

  • No taxes on gifts, estates, wealth, or capital gains.

Requirements of the New Zealand Active Investor Plus Visa Program

To qualify for residence, applicants must fulfill all of the following requirements:

  1. Invest between NZD 5 million and NZD 15 million over the course of four years

  1. Be in good health and of good character

  1. Spend 117 days in New Zealand across the four-year residence period

  1. Demonstrate English language ability

The following assets may be invested into and will be weighted accordingly to meet the NZD 15 million investment threshold:

  • Direct investments into approved businesses. These will be given a 3x weighting

  • Investments into approved managed funds (private equity or venture capital funds). These will be given a 2x weighting

  • Investment into listed equities and philanthropy. These will be given a 1x weighting (and each of these is capped at 50% of the NZD 15 million investment requirement)

Procedures and time frame of New Zealand residence by investment

Applications must be submitted with completed forms, the appropriate fees, and all required supporting documents. The approval process typically takes between eight to nine months.

Investments must be maintained over a three-year period, with a fourth year of holding the funds in New Zealand. After four years, provided the minimum residency requirements are met, investors can apply for permanent residence. Additionally, after fulfilling the investment and residency requirements, they can sponsor their parents under the Parent Retirement category.

Families included in the resident visa must enter New Zealand within 12 months of the visa being granted but are not required to stay for a specific duration. Family members aged 16 and older must either meet English language requirements or arrange for ESOL tuition to be completed upon arrival in New Zealand.

Visa holders can choose to live anywhere in New Zealand and are eligible to study as domestic students at all schools and tertiary institutions. To purchase residential real estate, they must usually be residing in New Zealand. Those who only meet the minimum stay requirements may need approval to buy property, but this requirement is lifted once they have been physically present in New Zealand for at least 183 days in the last 12 months and are considered a tax resident.

Acquiring citizenship after the New Zealand Active Investor Plus Visa Program

Successful applicants may apply for New Zealand citizenship after five years of residence. The New Zealand passport is among the top 10 in the world on the Henley Passport Index and facilitates access to over 180 destinations worldwide.
