Living in Luxembourg

Luxembourg, one of the world’s smallest nations, is located in Northwestern Europe and boasts a high standard of living. It shares borders with Belgium to the west and north, Germany to the northeast and east, and France to the south, making it an ideal hub for international trade and cultural diversity.

Ranked 8th out of 149 countries in the World Happiness Report 2021, Luxembourg's score is based on factors such as GDP, social support, low corruption, and personal freedom.

Almost half of Luxembourg’s population is made up of expatriates, attracted to its open, cosmopolitan society and excellent quality of life. Families benefit from a safe, family-friendly environment, top-tier healthcare (with state-funded medical coverage for all), and a multilingual, mostly state-funded education system. Foreign students are welcomed at Luxembourg University, one of Europe’s most diverse institutions, with students from 120 countries.

Luxembourg also offers free public transportation, allowing citizens to travel by bus, train, and tram without cost.

A rich business landscape

Luxembourg has a long-standing reputation in private wealth management. Its AAA credit rating makes it an attractive destination for business ventures. The country's robust financial sector, initially a private banking center, has evolved into a diverse hub for investment funds, banking, and insurance industries. Luxembourg’s economy is deeply integrated with Europe, benefiting from strong ties within the EU.

Legal and social security and personal freedom

Luxembourg is the world’s last remaining sovereign grand duchy, governed by a constitutional monarchy and a representative democracy. As a founding member of the European Union, it hosts the highest number of EU institutions and bodies. Luxembourg City, the capital, is one of the EU's four official capitals, alongside Brussels, Frankfurt, and Strasbourg, and is home to the EU’s highest judicial authority, the Court of Justice. The country also offers a robust social security system, providing various family benefits, including birth allowances, maternity and paternity leave, adoption leave, and parental leave.
